Tang break punches
As the name suggests, tang break punches are used to break off the tang from an insert so that the male fastener can fully pass through, thereby allowing the insert to accomplish full thread engagement with the male thread and achieve maximum thread strength. Tang removal may also be necessary to prevent the tang from galling against the male fastener, as well as to reduce the risk of foreign object debris in critical applications.
Efficient tang break-off is dependent upon having sufficient thread in the tapped hole to provide the necessary support at the tang elbow and adequate clearance beyond the insert for tang deflection. It is also crucial that the correct diameter tang removal tool is used. Provided these conditions apply, de-tanging is a relatively simple operation to perform, and we have tang break punches available in manual and automatic types.
Manual tang break tool
Available for sizes up to M12 and 1/2” in diameter, when using a manual tang break punch a sharp tap with a hammer will provide the sufficient force needed to remove the tang.
For sizes above M12 and 1/2”, a plain pin punch with a diameter slightly smaller than the minor diameter of the insert will suffice.

Automatic tang break tool
Available in sizes up to M12 and 1/2” in diameter, our automatic tang break punches are spring loaded to provide a consistent, controlled force when removing tangs, which reduces the chance of the tang bending rather than breaking, and makes them particularly effective for use on small diameter inserts.
To use the automatic tool, simply position it over the fitted insert and push down on the telescopic handle. The internal spring is loaded and then automatically released, firing the punch instantly.
